Control

Staying in shape physically and mentally is the most important aspect of your life. People judge you more by appearance then any other way. Get slimmer, be healthy, have more energy, take control, and you win. Everything else is secondary.

Increased physical activity and exercise is paramount to improving your mental power and gaining more control. Think of how you learn to play a musical instrument or meditate.  Practice, focus, intention, and control. All these lead to more pleasure, enjoyment, skill and satisfaction. Change, unlearning, and relearning new practices takes courage and determination. However, since life is action you must start moving NOW for a new beginning. Satoru

Change

Zen and life are too important to be taken gravely. Life is a cosmic theater where we should endeavor to play our essential roles significantly while not taking them too seriously. The powerful play goes on and you want to develop a verse, edit, and rewrite your own.

A Friend

An excerpt from A Way To Love – Laugh, soon to be published.

Kim*, It’s not strange to be able to tell a friend your troubles and share. That’s what friends are for and it helps to talk and relieve the stress.

My definition of a friend is a kind of honest, loving, light revealing, mirror in which we learn to recognize ourselves and are shaped and modified. We are lousy at being objective about ourselves, where we are going, whom we are going to be, what we will desire a decade from now, and most of all how and if we have changed and in what direction. A real friend can tell it to you bluntly and straight and perhaps save you some grief. Don’t marry that so and so, that’s an ill advised tattoo, consolidate, don’t make another purchase and lousy financial decision. But it is so hard to give heed to that we usually don’t listen.

Ocean Buddha

I was floating in forty feet of water with a mask, fins and snorkel. The cloudy sky cleared and the strong overhead sun felt good on my back. Suddenly the floor below exploded, as the sun shone through the gin clear waters, the waves acting like refraction gratings broke up the suns rays into the colors of light. Looking down at the pure white sand was to see a chain link fence, made of a thousand rainbows, covering the entire sea floor.

The continual motion on the surface made the links dance and undulate. My shadow cast on the pallid sand sent concentric circles radiating from my silhouette. The image was Buddha on the water, my outlines every disturbance radiating from my body.

Every circle was also a rainbow and this was superimposed on the chain-links of dancing colors that rippled around me. I was a dark entity surrounded by brilliant moving light. I was transfixed and mystified. There was nothing I could do but watch. When I do my Zen meditation I will focus on this image.

Death and Honor

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and honoring those who lost their lives in the service of their country. Buddhism is a teaching of the universality of death and peace. Zen Buddhism is also a philosophy of peace and honor but has a history based on the bushido code of the samurai who believed we must, “Pray for peace but prepare for war.” So if we follow a Zen Buddhists philosophy we must also remember those who were murdered in the 911 catastrophe as if they to were soldiers. Never forget that we are in a war against terrorist for their archaic radicalism, their murder of innocence, and their repression of women.
