Bushido Love

A student asks, “Can Zen and Bushido, the code of the Samurai, be adopted to daily living, and especially to relationships?

The philosophies of Zen, and the code of Bushido, have both evolved in order to be significant to modern individuals. The first path toward enlightenment in Zen is Proper views. The first principle in Bushido is Honor. Since both are moral compasses, they just needed to use more contemporary language.

Proper views. For a successful relationship love it for what it is, not for what you want. Take into account that great love and great achievements require great risks.

Bushido. In serving serve, in fighting kill, in loving give all and keep your heart as open as the sky.

Relationships

He yelled out to the woman who was walking on the other side of the river,
“Pardon me for dreaming out loud, but I think I’m in love with you.”

She replied, “Call me when you are not dreaming and sure.”

“But I want to love you now. How can I get to the other side?”

“Fool, she answered, “You are already on the other side.”

Do not search for a companion in some remote or exotic place.
The easiest place to find love is where you are.

Above is an excerpt from my new book on relationships, soon to be published on Amazon,
A Way To Love – Laugh.

Humor and Temperament

Two people sharing lives together, who both have a good sense of humor, are significantly happier than those couples with a poor sense of humor. Humor can act as an emotional release thereby releasing stress and promoting longevity. It also allows us to cultivate and keep friends, support groups, and perhaps even love, and love heals. You want to be with someone who makes you smile and laugh. To me, it is the definitive personally trait that makes being with someone over time possible.

Laugh, and the world laughs with you; / Weep, and you weep alone; / For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, / But has trouble enough of its own. Solitude by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Buddhism and Zen may be kissing cousins, but they are not married.

Sometimes virtuous practitioners have taught Buddhism like the gently nagging of a little old lady. Although teaching with love is always excellent my Zen master believed that in this day and age of rapid acceleration and the ability to absorb multiple images, even though Zen understanding deepens slowly, that we had better move along and keep the momentum. So he eliminated the ethereal, impractical sayings and gongans from his teachings and concentrated on the practical and operative aspects of Zen. He also asserted that although he was a Zen Buddhist that Buddhism and Zen may be kissing cousins, but they are not married and that Zen stands by itself, singularly like a different musical instrument.
