Physical Zen

A student asks, “Why do you speak so much about the physical? Isn’t Zen mainly about the mind?

A cracked pot does not hold water. Those who would preserve the spirit must also look after the body to which it is attached.

Zen is a collection of essential health advice organized around attitude, mindfulness, wellness, correct thinking and the components of achieving physical and mental health. Zen is a philosophy, that when internalized and practiced successfully, acts as a vehicle to enhance your potential, focus your energy, and create a solid center for your existence. Using the Zen philosophy we learn that physically, mentally and spiritually we have to continually move toward a stature that allows us to grow, improve and gain success.

Zen Lake House

A frozen wind creeps across the icy surface of the lake and onto the snow-covered slope. The chill blows over me and through my cloths as if I was wearing mesh. The stone cold silence is punctuated by absolute stillness. In the vast space I search for movement and listen for sound but there is none. This Arctic Anomie reminds me of the hard years spent in Alaska. But now I stand alone enjoying the still isolation and the panorama of this polar vortex.

NYU Course

As a master teacher, Zen Buddhist layman, and mentor, I have been invited to teach a course at New York University, based on the book, A Way To Live – Zen. The lecture series is the same name as the textbook and will begin in the spring term. The course offers an alternate way of seeing reality and living the life you want to live. I appreciate this opportunity to share some of the Zen teachings and health improvements with everyone.

Senses

The twenty-knot wind pushed the sea and piled up the whitecaps along the horizon lining them up like a frothing regatta. The blustery weather is strong but not threatening because it is warm and dry. Still, the wind whipped trees undulating all around me, creating dissimilar sounds as they brush together, affecting the possibility of danger. In the background the breathing of the breaking sea powerfully rolling onto the beach composes a subtle symphony with the airstream and branches forcing me to reconnect to my senses by respecting the overwhelming surrounding nature.

CHANGE

Attachment to permanence is illusionary, since all life is change.

Some people wait all their lives for the opportunity that is right in front of them and that they have missed because of not being able to take a chance, fear, or the excess baggage they are carrying around.

Remember that Zen perception is about living in the now of the present moment, as well as spontaneity and simplicity.
