NYU Course

As a master teacher, Zen Buddhist layman, and mentor, I have been invited to teach a course at New York University, based on the book, A Way To Live – Zen. The lecture series is the same name as the textbook and will begin in the spring term. The course offers an alternate way of seeing reality and living the life you want to live. I appreciate this opportunity to share some of the Zen teachings and health improvements with everyone.

Senses

The twenty-knot wind pushed the sea and piled up the whitecaps along the horizon lining them up like a frothing regatta. The blustery weather is strong but not threatening because it is warm and dry. Still, the wind whipped trees undulating all around me, creating dissimilar sounds as they brush together, affecting the possibility of danger. In the background the breathing of the breaking sea powerfully rolling onto the beach composes a subtle symphony with the airstream and branches forcing me to reconnect to my senses by respecting the overwhelming surrounding nature.

CHANGE

Attachment to permanence is illusionary, since all life is change.

Some people wait all their lives for the opportunity that is right in front of them and that they have missed because of not being able to take a chance, fear, or the excess baggage they are carrying around.

Remember that Zen perception is about living in the now of the present moment, as well as spontaneity and simplicity.

Life is not a spectator sport.

Do you believe in Genies?

If your answer is “no” go back to sleep. If your answer is “yes,” will you be aggressive enough to rub the bottle? If not, it does not matter what you believe. Even a genie, someone that can grant you your life’s wishes, needs some encouragement. If you are so passive, inhibited, inflexible or scared that you refuse to believe or to rub the bottle then you suffer the consequences of inaction, and your chance to fulfill your dreams is lost forever.

Keep your feet in the mud but reach for the moon.

Make no little plan because they have no magic to stir one’s imagination. Make big plans, work hard and visualize your success. If you fail at the big plan you will still have accomplished more then if you only had made only minor plans.

Success

Improve isn’t a clarion word, it is instead the secret to success.

Grandiose schemes and theories never achieve the same results as the accumulation of small consistent attainable goals.

Add up the smaller parts that work and improve a little every day.

Don’t measure your successes by what you have but how much fun you had getting there.
