Allegiance

We, in the United States, cannot welcome everyone from everywhere. Although it is a great moral position, it is only a universalist abstraction and an unrealistic physical reality. Decades ago, every naturalized citizen signed and took an oath of allegiance to become a citizen and give up all affiliations that would be an obstacle to assimilation. I am racking my processor for an apt euphemism, other than stating that today, this is politically incorrect to ask another culture to assimilate. But, if we are willing to give them freedom, democracy and a better life, is it not fair to ask for allegiance in return?
